Husk-E-News: March 2008

Valentine’s Day brings out the romance in people, and this year the UCAA received a little romance of its own. This past February 14th, in the early afternoon, a young couple took a drive to the Storrs campus and dropped in to the Alumni Center. They looked through the mementos on display, and were kind enough to share their story.

Althea (Davis) Stadler ’38 and Richard Clapp ’39 met in 1935, and were lab partners who became close friends. Althea even served as a bridesmaid in Richard’s wedding several years after graduating from UConn. Though their lives went in different directions, they continued to stay in touch throughout the years. They were each married for over sixty years, started families, and when their spouses passed, and they leaned on each other for support. Not only did they find comfort in each other, but they also found love. On May 18, 2007 they were married, 72 years after first meeting.

The couple enjoys visiting their alma mater, and returned on Valentine’s Day to share their story and celebrate the place that brought them together.
