Dr. De Souza earned a Ph.D. in 1988 in Exercise Physiology from the Neag School. She was chosen to receive this award because of her leadership of women’s health-oriented programs at the University of Toronto, the University of Connecticut Health Center, the Reproductive Medicine Institute of Connecticut and the New Britain General Hospital
Dr. DeSouza is known nationally and internationally for her work in the area of reproductive endocrinology, exercise and skeletal health. As a result of her cutting-edge research she has been able to obtain major funding for her work. Her colleagues describe her as a team player and leader and she is seen as a caring and diligent mentor to students. She has over 6- data-based research publications. Dr. De Souza pursues her research with passion, skill, diligence and conscientiousness. She works to advance others through her own success.
Dr. De Souza has received numerous awards and honors. In 1988 she was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. She has been a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine since 1992. She served as President of the New England Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine in 1996-97. She received the Outstanding Research Award from the UConn Alumni Association in 2005. She has several professional memberships and her work as a prominent researcher is highly praised by colleagues in her field.
