Dr. David Mark Fetterman `76 PDF Print E-mail

Dr. Fetterman earned a B.A. degree from the Neag School in 1976. He is currently the Director of Evaluation at the School of Medicine, Stanford University.

Dr. Fetterman’s publications include 10 books, over 100 articles and reports, and contributions to encyclopedia. His books Empowerment evaluation principles in practice and Ethnography: Step by Step are considered landmark publications. Dr. Fetterman is recognized for his innovative teaching (including online teaching). He inspires his students. In one example, they raised $10,000 to donate to Belle Haven’s Elementary School in East Menlo Park. The students told Dr. Fetterman the fundraiser was based on his lectures about wealthier schools that have access to computers and poorer schools that do not. In addition to his faculty roles, Dr. Fetterman serves as the Director of the Arkansas Evaluation Center and the Chair of the Collaborative, Participatory, and Empowerment division of the American Evaluation Association.

Dr. Fetterman has received numerous awards including the Lazarsfeld and Myrdal evaluation awards, the highest honors in the field of evaluation. He received the Mensa Education and Research Foundation award for his book Excellence and Equality: A Qualitatively Different Perspective on Gifted and Talented Education. He was also a recipient of the George and Louise Spindler Award, Ethnographic Evaluation Award, and the Washington Association of Practicing Anthropologists’ Praxis Publication Award. Dr. Fetterman was elected a fellow of the American Anthropological Association and is a past-president of the American Evaluation Association and the American Anthropological Association’s Council on Anthropology and Education.
