Dr. Spillane received a M.A. from the Neag School in 1959 and a Ph.D. in 1967, both in Educational Leadership. He is being recognized as an outstanding educational leader. He was Superintendent of Schools in Fairfax County, Virginia; Boston, Massachusetts; New Rochelle, New York; and Glassboro, New Jersey. He served as New York State Deputy Commissioner of Education for four years and has taught and lectured at several universities, including Harvard, Columbia, Fordham and New York.
Dr. Spillane began his career as a classroom teacher in Storrs, Connecticut in 1956. He served as Principal in Chaplin and Trumbull, Connecticut before being named Assistant to the Superintendent in Darien, Connecticut. His first appointment as Superintendent came in 1966. He was Superintendent of the Fairfax, Virginia School System, the tenth largest school system in the United States, from 1985 to 1997. Upon completion of his tenure, he became the Regional Education Director for Europe, part of the U.S. Department of State Office of Overseas Schools. He is held in high esteem by teachers and other administrators throughout the world.
Dr. Spillane is the author of numerous articles, book chapters and national/ international conference presentations. He is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including the National Superintendent of the Year Award presented by the American Association of School Administrators in 1995 and the Distinguished Alumni Award presented by the University of Connecticut Alumni Association in 1986. Finally, Dr. Spillane was active in several professional organizations, particularly the American Association of School Administrators.
