Robert Milvae
Faculty Excellence in Teaching - Undergraduate Level, 2008
Nominated By: Daniel Fletcher
Department of Animal Science, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources
Dr. Robert Milvae is the recipient of the UConn Alumni Association Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award (Undergraduate Level) for his unique approach to teaching and his commitment above and beyond the requirements of the classroom. An Associate Professor of Reproductive Physiology, Milvae has been on the UConn faculty since 1986. He is known for his efforts to make class interesting and interactive, beginning his 8 a.m. reproductive physiology class with music, a story, or games to not only reinforce what was learned in the last class but also to energize the students and prepare them to learn more. He has developed creative methods for stimulating students’ passion, holding an awards ceremony on the last day of his Lab Animal Science class, organizing a field trip to Mystic Aquarium for a behind-the-scenes description of their reproduction program, and arranging for a day long artificial insemination clinic to be provided by Genex AI Cooperative. In addition to his distinctive teaching methods he is a very active academic counselor, always willing to meet with students and making himself available for department tours for prospective students.
