UConn alumni, faculty and friends help to bring the University to a new level through their innovative work and loyal support. The University of Connecticut Alumni Association has established numerous awards recognizing such outstanding contributions and achievements by alumni, non-alumni and faculty, all of whom have played an important part in serving the University community.

Awards are allocated in several categories:

Alumni Association Service Award

Presented to an alumnus who has consistently provided exemplary service to the University community, enhancing the stature, success and well being of the University of Connecticut Alumni Association. Community service and professional accomplishments are considered. The honoree's extraordinary interest in the University, demonstrated through dedicated volunteer service, should be an inspiration to the campus community.

Distinguished Alumni Award

The Distinguished Alumni Award originated in 1956 for the purpose of providing recognition for the outstanding professional, personal and civic achievements of men and women who are former students of the University of Connecticut. Excellence in these areas brings pride and distinction to the University.

Distinguished Alumni Professorship Award

The Distinguished Alumni Professorship is a three-year appointment awarded to a full-time faculty member of international reputation whose scholarship reflects a substantial credit on the university -- in short, a "Renaissance person."

Honorary Alumni Award

This award originated in 1972 and is presented time to time to a non-alumnus whose past, present and potential impact on the University community qualifies them for alumni status. The honoree's professional, personal, civic and philanthropic pursuits reflect the high standards and values associated with the University of Connecticut, the Alumni Association and higher education.

Graduate of the Last Decade (G.O.L.D).

This award was established for the first time in 1999 to recognize the outstanding service and accomplishments of an exceptional young alumna/alumnus of the University of Connecticut.

For the purposes of this award an alumna/alumnus is any person whose class graduated from the University of Connecticut during the previous decade, 1997-2007. Areas of service may include professional, personal, civic and/or service to UConn. This individual's achievements bring inspiration to young alumni, their peers and current undergraduate students.

University Service Award

Presented to an alumnus or non-alumnus, not currently employed by the University of Connecticut, whose exceptional contributions to the University community strengthen and support the values and the mission of the institution. It is presented to persons whose special qualities and accomplishments merit University recognition.

Humanitarian Award

Established in 2005, the Humanitarian Award is awarded to honor alumni who have made outstanding contributions to humanity.

Faculty Excellence in Research (Humanities/Social Sciences and Sciences)

The Faculty Excellence in Research Award is based upon the total thrust of a professor's research. The purpose of the award is to encourage excellence in scholarly research that again assists the University in continuing efforts to attain the highest academic recognition.

Faculty Excellence in Teaching (Undergraduate and Graduate Levels)

Basic to the greatness of the university is the quality of its faculty. The purpose of this award is to provide an incentive to encourage excellence in classroom teaching and thus to assist the University in its continuing efforts to attain the highest academic recognition.
