Liberty Mutual Insurance and Safety Tip of the Month: Driving Green

With gasoline prices still high and perhaps on the rise, as well as increasing reports about the impact of greenhouse gases on the environment, now is the time to rethink how you typically maintain and operate your vehicles. Try following these tips to increase your fuel efficiency:

- Avoid idling for more than 30 seconds. Save gas by turning off your engine.
- Eliminate excess weight from your trunk and luggage racks.
- Follow the recommendations for fuel octane in your manual and only use higher octane gas if it's recommended.
- Keep your tires properly inflated to save 2-3% in fuel economy. Tires can lose one pound of pressure per month.

UCONN R&D Corporation to Fund Cartilage Replacement Technology Research

A recent invention developed by UCHC researchers using State Stem Cell Research funding appears to replace cartilage through the use of stem cells. Since UCONN R&D Corporation is interested in forming a start up to commercialize this technology, a grant worth up to $75,000 from the Center for Science and Technology Commercialization prototype fund is being provided to develop a prototype. Researchers Caroline Dealy and Bob Kosher developed the technology for which a patent has been filed. While this is not enough money to reach commercialization, it will allow Dealy and Kosher to generate data for a follow on stem cell grant or an industry partnership so that the full potential of this technology can be realized.

The Huskies Win the 2010 Papajohns.com Bowl

Congratulations to the UConn Football team for winning the 2010 Papajohns.com Bowl! The Huskies delivered a dominating, defensive performance over the South Carolina Gamecocks, with a final score of 20-7. The win marks UConn's third overall bowl victory and its first-ever win over an opponent from the SEC.

The Alumni Association was in Birmingham, AL and captured lots of photos of Huskies having fun! Our fans and alums made such an impact on one local resident, Jimmy Mitchell, that he even put together a slide show of our pre-game events to show his appreciation. Thanks Jimmy!
