Wolodymyr Madych

Faculty Excellence Award in Research, Sciences 2008

Department of Mathematics, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
Nominated by: Evarist Giné & Michael Neumann

Dr. Wolodymyr Madych is the recipient of the UConn Alumni Association Faculty Excellence in Research Award (Sciences) for his fundamental research in the field of mathematics. Madych has been a Professor of Mathematics at UConn since 1984 and focuses his research in Approximation Theory, which has had a deep impact in areas such as artificial intelligence, neural nets and statistical learning theory; Multiresolution Analysis; and the Radon transform, which constitutes the mathematical basis for tomography (CAT scanners and other devices). He has written many journal articles and well-cited papers on his research. Typically, a paper in mathematics is considered very successful in view of impact if it has more than 20 citations and “top” if it has more than 100. Madych has two articles exceeding by far the 100 threshold, four more with more than 50 and six more with more than 20 – an unusually good record, and one of the best in the math department. Although he is dedicated to his research he also provides academic and personal support to his undergraduate and graduate students.
